Brown house moth

Hofmannophila pseudospretella

The brown house moth is a small moth that lives in houses all over the world. Its wings are pale yellow-brown with dark brown spots. Its caterpillars are the real troublemakers: they nibble clothes, carpets and food in the cupboard.

Harmless to people. It cannot bite or sting, but its caterpillars can make holes in clothes and spoil food.
What does it eat?
The caterpillars eat all sorts of things in houses: cereals, dried fruit, seeds, wool clothes, fur, leather, book covers and even wine corks. Outdoors they live in birds' nests and eat droppings and bits of rubbish.
