Common sea skater

The common sea skater is a tiny bug that lives on top of the open ocean, far from land. It skates over the waves on long legs and never dives into the water. Its body shines silvery, because tiny hairs hold a thin layer of air around it.

Fun facts
It is one of the only insects in the world that live on the open sea.
It can skate half a metre to a whole metre in one second and jump about 10 centimetres high.
It has no wings at all, not even as a grown-up, so it can never fly.
Its legs have different jobs: the front legs hold food, the long middle legs push it along, and the back legs steer.
It lays its eggs on floating things, like seabird feathers, driftwood or even bits of plastic.
