Orange migrant

The orange migrant is a bright butterfly from South East Asia and Australia. The male has white front wings with black edges and sunny yellow back wings. Its whole life from egg to butterfly can take only about three weeks.

Its eggs are milky white and shaped like tiny spindles. The mother lays them one by one on leaves.
The eggs hatch after only one or two days, and the caterpillar is fully grown after less than two weeks.
The full-grown caterpillar is about 4 centimetres long, green and smooth, with a white line along its side.
The chrysalis hangs upright on the plant, and after seven days a butterfly climbs out.
It was found in Sri Lanka only recently, far from the rest of its home.
