The small tortoiseshell is a bright orange butterfly with black and yellow patches and a row of little blue spots along the edges of its wings. When it folds its wings, the underside is dull brown, so it hides well. It is one of the first butterflies you see on warm spring days.

What does it eat?
The grown-up butterfly drinks sweet nectar from flowers. Its caterpillars munch on stinging nettles, and the stings do not bother them at all.
