Fun facts

1

It sings by rubbing two hard veins on its wings together, one rough and one smooth, like a comb and a fingernail.

2

It sings most around sunrise. When nights are colder than 10 degrees, it sings in the daytime instead.

3

When a girl comes close, the boy switches to a quiet song, so hungry animals do not hear him.

4

Crickets from west Texas can be twice as long as crickets from North Dakota.

5

Toads, wild turkeys, hawks, wolf spiders and salamanders all like to eat it.
