Brown drake

The brown drake is a mayfly that lives all over the United States. Its young dig burrows in the sand and mud at the bottom of streams. On summer nights the grown-ups pop out of the water, mate and fly about.

How fast is it?
Fun facts
It is the most common mayfly of its family in North America.
It comes out of the water from mid-June to mid-July, always at night.
When the young come up, they float on the water until they can fly to nearby leaves. Trout love to catch them then.
Trout, bass, perch, salmon and catfish all eat brown drakes.
People who fish make fake brown drakes out of feathers to trick the trout.
