Common awl

The common awl is a skipper, a kind of butterfly with a thick body. On top it is plain dark brown. Underneath, parts of its wings have a soft purple shine.

The female has big yellow spots on her front wings. The male has only a few tiny dots.
It lives in many countries, from Sri Lanka and India to Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia.
The first one that scientists described came from the island of Java in Indonesia.
The ones living in Sri Lanka look a little different: they have no purple shine underneath.
