The common lascar is a small black butterfly with bright orange bands and stripes. Underneath, its wings are chestnut brown with lilac lines. It lives in warm, tropical parts of Asia.

Its caterpillar comes in two forms. One is smooth, and one has long spines.

The smooth caterpillar is the colour of a withered leaf, with dark bands that look exactly like the gaps between little leaflets. It is a perfect disguise.

The two kinds of caterpillar are never found together.

In the dry season the orange markings on its wings are much broader.
