Convoluted gall wasp

The convoluted gall wasp is a tiny brown wasp from California. Its babies grow inside pink bumps on oak leaves. A bunch of these bumps together looks a bit like a little pink brain.

The pink, brain shaped lump is really a cluster of many small galls stuck together.
The galls grow in summer on the underside of valley oak leaves, along the middle vein.
The grown-up wasps come out of the galls the next spring.
The adult wasps are only 2.5 millimetres long, smaller than a grain of rice.
