Emerald tip beetle

The emerald tip beetle is a chunky Australian beetle, biscuit brown with a green or golden shine. Its body underneath is green with white hairs. It is one of the Christmas beetles, and it has strong jaws for chewing tough gum tree leaves.

Its jaws are so strong that a big group can strip a gum tree of its leaves.
It picks leaves of medium age and skips the fresh new ones and the old ones.
It is picky about trees too: it eats Tasmanian blue gum but ignores a tree called blackbutt.
Tree growers have even bred gum trees that it does not like, to protect their forests.
The female is a little bigger than the male. She grows up to 26 millimetres long.
