Great banded grayling

The great banded grayling is a big black or dark brown butterfly with a broad white band across its wings. It likes to rest on tree trunks, head up and wings closed. Then its grey, marbled underside looks just like bark.

It is the only species in its group, so it has no close sisters.
On the south coast of Europe there can be huge numbers. Once, more than 30 were counted on a single tree.
The young caterpillars sleep through the winter.
Its chrysalis just lies loose on the ground, purple brown and pointed at both ends.
