Pointed snail

The pointed snail has a very unusual shell: tall, thin and pointy like a tiny ice cream cone turned upside down. It is usually cream-coloured with brown blotches or bands. It loves sandy places near the sea.

Its shell is 10 to 20 millimetres tall but only 4 to 7 millimetres wide.
Its shell has 8 to 11 turns, coiling up to a blunt tip.
In hot, dry weather it glues itself to fence posts and tall weeds and waits for cooler days.
In some places, like coastal dunes in Britain, there are huge numbers of them.
In Australia it was brought in by people and has become a pest.
