Golden stag beetle

The golden stag beetle is a big black beetle with wide orange edges on its wing cases. The males have a huge pair of jaws that stick out in front like deer antlers. The females look almost the same, but with short jaws.

A big male can be 9 centimetres long with his jaws, about as long as a grown-up's finger.
Males come in three different shapes, with small, medium or big jaws. Only one other stag beetle in the world is known to do this.
The mums lay their eggs in fallen leaves and rotten wood.
In one kind that lives in China, the wing cases are almost all black with only a thin orange edge.
