Large banded grasshopper

The large banded grasshopper is a big grasshopper of mountain meadows. Its body is yellow-brown or yellow-green with dark marks, and its back legs are bright red. Its knees are black with a white band around them.

Only the males can fly. The females have short wings that are too small for flying.
The males make different sounds to say this is my place, to argue with another male or to win over a female.
The mother lays her eggs in little packets in short tunnels she digs in the ground.
It first came from the steppes of Central Asia, but now it also lives in the mountains of Europe, like the Alps and the Pyrenees.
