Gorgone checkerspot

The gorgone checkerspot is an orange butterfly with black markings, like a little chequered flag. Its back wings have a row of round black dots. Underneath, it has a zigzag pattern of brown and white bands.

In the north it has one family of young each summer, in the middle of its range two, and in the south three.
The mother lays her eggs in groups on the underside of leaves.
The young caterpillars eat together in a group.
The caterpillars sleep through the winter and wake up again in spring.
It lives between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains.
