Red-based Jezebel

The red-based Jezebel is a black butterfly decorated with white and bright yellow patches. Under its back wings, close to the body, it has a rich crimson red spot. That red base gives it its name.

Many of its caterpillars' food plants are mistletoes, plants that grow on the branches of other trees.
Its caterpillar is reddish brown with rows of long black and yellow bristles. It grows to about 5 centimetres.
The pupa is very dark and has three sharp points on its head.
It belongs to the whites and yellows family, the same family as the cabbage white butterfly.
