Crimson patch

The crimson patch is a black butterfly with rows of little white spots and a bright orange-red patch on each back wing. It flutters along forest edges, fields and streams. Its caterpillars are covered in rows of soft black spines.

In warm tropical places it has young all year round.
In the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, cold snaps can wipe them out, and then new ones fly in from Mexico.
A look-alike, the rosita patch, has no white spots along its wing edges.
Its caterpillars are grey-white to green.
