Palm king

The palm king is a big brown butterfly from the warm forests of Asia. Underneath, its wings have pale lilac stripes and two round eyespots. Its caterpillars live on palm leaves and eat a lot.

Its wings measure 11 to 12 centimetres from tip to tip, which is big for a butterfly.
It lays its creamy white eggs in a neat row. Each egg has a black dot, and the eggs turn black just before they hatch.
A fully grown caterpillar is about 7 centimetres long, as long as a grown-up's finger.
Its pupa is green with lines like a leaf, so it hides perfectly among the pointy leaves of its food plant.
In southern India it was seen in 1891, and then it was found again there more than 100 years later, in 2007.
