Pea weevil

The pea weevil is a tiny beetle with a short snout. Its back is covered in little coloured scales that make neat stripes. It nibbles the leaves of peas and beans.

Its babies hatch in the soil and eat the tiny root bumps that help pea plants grow.
In winter the grown-up beetles hide at the edges of fields and wait for warm weather.
When it gets to about 12 degrees warm, they wake up and let the wind carry them to new fields.
Its legs are partly red, while the top parts of the legs are dark.
