Beaded chestnut

The beaded chestnut is an autumn moth with reddish brown wings, like a shiny chestnut. A row of little dark spots along the edge of its wing looks like beads. It flies on cool autumn nights when most other moths are gone.

Its colour changes a lot from moth to moth: bright rusty red, dull brown, yellowish, grey or even bluish lilac.
Its eggs are yellowish when laid and then turn olive brown.
The caterpillar is green with tiny white dots, thin white lines on its back and a wide white stripe on each side.
The moths fly in September and October.
