Common duffer

The common duffer is a brown butterfly from Southeast Asia. The male is dark brown with rows of bluish spots, and the female is purplish brown with white spots. Underneath it is a dull brown, like a dry leaf.

During the day the caterpillar hides inside three or four bamboo leaves that it ties together with silk.
A fully grown caterpillar is about 5 centimetres long, black and grey, and covered in white hairs.
The pupa is white and hangs by its tail. A few hours before the butterfly comes out, it turns dark brown.
The butterfly stays inside its pupa for about three weeks.
