Almond ringlet

The almond ringlet is a dark brown butterfly from the mountains of Europe. Across its wings runs a row of orange spots shaped like almonds, each with a small black dot inside. It flutters over flowery mountain meadows in summer.

It lives between 1,000 and 2,200 metres above the sea.
The top and bottom of its wings look the same.
Its caterpillar sleeps through winter when it is only half grown, and turns into a chrysalis the next spring.
The females are a bit bigger and lighter brown than the males.
