Androgeus swallowtail

The Androgeus swallowtail is a big, dark butterfly from Central and South America. The male has very wide yellow bands across his wings. The female looks quite different, with hind wings that shimmer metallic blue or turquoise.

Its wings measure 134 to 140 millimetres from tip to tip, wider than a grown-up's palm.
In many places the female comes in two forms: one with big yellow patches on the front wings and one without.
Its caterpillar is olive green to blackish brown with a pale greenish white saddle in the middle of its back.
It is common in open country, in gardens and at the edges of woods.
It flies from April to October, with several families each year.
