Arthropleura
Arthropleura was a giant millipede that lived more than 290 million years ago. It could grow longer than a grown-up person is tall. It is the biggest creature with a hard outer shell and jointed legs that has ever lived on land.

Its footprints have been found as fossils, and some of its trackways are up to 50 centimetres wide.
It lived in open woods near water and may have been able to live both in water and on land.
The first fossil was found in 1849 when workers were building a railway in Germany.
For a long time scientists thought it was a crab or a shrimp relative before they realised it was a millipede.
In 2024, scientists used special scans to see the head of young Arthropleura fossils for the first time.
