Knobbled orbweaver

The knobbled orbweaver is a round web spider from Australia and New Zealand. Its triangle shaped body has two humps at the front and little knobs at the back. Every spider has its own colours: red-brown, yellow, green, grey, white or even black.

Baby spiders travel by ballooning: they float away on a thread of silk carried by the wind. That is probably how the spiders reached New Zealand from Australia.
It is probably the most common big spider in New Zealand.
A mother lays several hundred pink eggs and wraps them in an olive green silk cocoon.
The females are almost twice as big as the males.
It usually builds its web at night, but on dull, cloudy days it may build in the daytime too.
