Fun facts
Eggs laid in rhubarb never hatch. The sticky sap kills them, or the growing stalk squashes them.
So its babies grow up in dock, sunflower and thistle stalks instead, where the grub tunnels all the way down to the ground.
Its grub has no legs and a brown head, often with a mark like an upside-down letter Y.
Sometimes several young grubs start in one stalk but only one grows up, so scientists think they may eat each other.
It spends the winter as a grown-up beetle hidden in fallen leaves and comes out in May.
