The sabre wasp is a thin black wasp with white spots and reddish legs. The female has a super long, hair-thin tail that can be longer than her body. She uses it to drill deep into wood.

What does it eat?
The grown-ups lick sugary honeydew and do not visit flowers. The larvae live on other insect larvae hidden inside wood and eat them.

It is one of the biggest ichneumon wasps in Europe.

The female can find larvae hidden up to 4 cm deep inside a tree trunk, drill down to them and lay an egg on them.

Its main targets are the larvae of wood wasps and longhorn beetles.
