Giant redeye

The giant redeye is a big skipper butterfly from India and Sri Lanka. Its wings are dark chocolate brown with bright yellow, see-through square spots. Its caterpillars grow up on palm trees.

Its caterpillar wears a shaggy coat made of pure wax, which rubs off easily when you touch it.
Under the wax coat, the caterpillar is greyish-white with a few yellowish spots.
The male has a furry patch of pale hair on the underside of each front wing.
With its wings spread it can be up to about 8 centimetres wide, which is big for a skipper.
