Australian golden orbweaver

The Australian golden orbweaver is a large spider that builds a huge round web, about one metre across. The female is giant compared to the tiny male. She has a black front body with a white pattern and a grey to brown back end.

Its web is about as wide as a small child is tall, and it builds extra barrier webs beside it for protection.
A female can be 40 millimetres long, but a male is only about 7 millimetres.
A mother lays about 380 eggs on average.
It was the second Australian spider ever described by a European scientist, back in 1799.
Its scientific name means edible, because people in New Caledonia used to eat it.
