Palo verde root borer

The palo verde root borer is a huge black or brown beetle with very long feelers and spikes on its back. It is one of the biggest beetles in North America, almost as long as a grown-up's hand. It can fly, but sometimes it flies a bit clumsily.

Its grubs can live under the ground for up to three years.
Gardeners sometimes dig up the huge cream coloured grubs in flower beds.
For more than 100 years scientists mixed it up with another beetle. It only got its own name in 2007.
The grown-up beetles come out in summer to find a partner.
