Tropical tent-web spider

Cyrtophora citricola
Eats: Other bugs and small animalsSpidersGardens and meadows8 legsNot an insect, but a bug cousin

The tropical tent-web spider builds a web shaped like a flat tent, not like a normal round web. Many of these spiders can live together and their webs can cover a whole tree. Some are black and white, others brown.

Fun fact: spiders are not insects. Insects have six legs, spiders have eight. Everyone calls them bugs anyway!
Lives in
Africa, Asia, Australia, southern Europe and parts of the Americas, in trees and bushes
Length
0.3 to 1 cm (0.12 to 0.39 in)
females are much bigger than males
Top speed
about 1.2 km/h (0.75 mph)
On foot, estimate
What does it eat?
It catches flying insects. They bump into the top part of the web and fall down into the flat net, where the spider grabs them.
