California patch

The California patch is a bright butterfly from the deserts of the southwestern United States and Mexico. Its wings are brownish-black with a wide yellow-orange band and big orange spots. It flutters through dry desert washes and canyons.

Under its back wing there is a red spot near the body that blends into the orange band.
It lives in desert washes, the dry riverbeds that only fill with water after rain.
