Juniper shield bug

The juniper shield bug is a green shield bug with pretty pinkish red markings on its wings. Its favourite plant is juniper, and its young feed on juniper berries. Because people plant juniper and cypress in their gardens, it has moved into gardens too.

In England it used to be rare, but now it is common thanks to garden juniper and cypress.
It has recently been found in northern England and Scotland, so it may still be spreading.
It spends the winter as a grown-up and comes out to find a mate in early spring.
It is active for most of the year, except in the coldest months.
