Common carpet beetle

The common carpet beetle is a tiny round beetle, only about 3 millimetres long. It is black, sprinkled with white and orange scales. The grown-up beetle visits flowers, but its hairy babies like to munch on wool, carpets and fur.

Its babies can eat holes in carpets and clothes, and even nibble insect collections in museums.
The mother lays 30 to 60 tiny white eggs at a time, and they have little hooks that stick to carpet fibres.
As the beetle gets older, its coloured scales rub off, so it slowly changes how it looks.
The fully grown hairy larva is bigger than the grown-up beetle.
Outdoors, it lays its eggs in bird nests and bee hives, where there are hairs and feathers.
