Stone spider

The stone spider is a small, dark wolf spider that lives near water in the United States and Canada. It loves stony beaches, where it sits in the sun and waits for food to come close. It is very common on some beaches.

It is a wolf spider, a spider that hunts instead of building a web to catch food.
It sits still and waits, then grabs prey that comes too close.
It likes to bask in the sun on the stones.
On one beach in Rhode Island scientists counted about 30 of them along every half metre of shore.
In warm months some of them move up and down the beach with the tides.
