The cattail mosquito is a mosquito with stripy legs and speckled wings. Its babies live underwater in swamps and have a clever trick: they breathe by poking a tiny tube into the roots of cattail plants. The females drink blood and can fly long distances.

Mostly North America, in swamps and marshes. It has been recorded on every continent except Antarctica

Dangerous: look, do not touch
Its bite can pass on serious illnesses like West Nile virus. Wear long sleeves near swamps in summer, do not let mosquitoes bite you, and tell a grown-up if you feel unwell after bites.
What does it eat?
The females drink blood from people and big animals. The larvae get their air from water plants instead of the surface.
