The hermit

The hermit is a dark brown butterfly with a band of white spots across its wings and a dark eyespot near each front wing tip. It loves dry, sunny, grassy places, and likes to rest on bare ground and on big stones.

It lives high up, between about 500 and 2,500 metres above the sea.
When it rests, it keeps its wings tightly closed.
The small northern ones fly low with a hopping flight, while the big ones from Africa and Asia float along quite fast.
It comes in many sizes and patterns. Some have yellowish bands instead of white ones.
You can see the butterflies from July to September.
