Lesser gull

The lesser gull is a white butterfly from South and Southeast Asia. The male is white with black wing tips, while the female is dark brown with white streaks. It even changes its look with the seasons: butterflies born in the rainy season look different from those born in the dry season.

In the rainy season the underside of its wings is greenish yellow. In the dry season it turns ochre brown, like dry leaves.
The male is mostly white on top, but the female is dark brownish black with white streaks.
Its wings measure about 6 to 7 centimetres from tip to tip.
It was first described by the French scientist Hippolyte Lucas in 1852.
