Golden redrump tarantula

The golden redrump tarantula is a big, hairy spider from Mexico. Its front part is golden, and its round back end is dark and covered with long red hairs. It spends the day in a burrow and comes out at dusk.

A female can live for about 15 years, and sometimes even 20. Males live about 5 years.
Its golden front part can look grey, pink or yellow, depending on the light.
A mother lays about 500 eggs, sometimes up to 900, in a silk cocoon. The babies hatch 8 to 10 weeks later.
It digs long burrows under big rocks, or moves into old nests left by mice and other animals.
It is protected, so wild ones should not be caught and sold.
