The common garden orb web spider is a big, colourful spider from Africa. From above, its body is bright yellow with black stripes and a knobbly outline. It spins a round web low in the bushes and waits head down in the middle.

The female is about 25 millimetres long, but the male is only about 6 millimetres.
It often decorates its web with a thick zigzag band of silk.
It uses the same web for several days and fixes it when it gets damaged.
After rain, people once found an Argiope city with 50 to 60 webs in the bushes, probably because there were lots of grasshoppers.
Its legs have stripes of light and dark colours.
